From 1880 to 2023, the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Earth's atmosphere has increased significantly due to human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. According to the most recent data available from the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, as of February 2023, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was approximately 416 parts per million (ppm).
The increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations has led to the warming of the planet and a range of negative impacts on the environment and human societies, including rising sea levels, more frequent and severe heatwaves, changes in precipitation patterns, and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events
To mitigate these impacts, there is a growing global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy. This includes measures such as increasing the use of renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable land use practices. However, despite these efforts, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is expected to continue to increase in the coming years.
